A protist - is any eukaryotic organism that is not an animal, plant, or fungus. They don't fit anywhere else, to any other kingdom, so they have to stay together.
In some systems of biological classification, such as the popular five-Kingdom scheme proposed by Robert Whittaker in 1969, the protists make up a Kingdom called Protista. They rule there firmly but fairly (at least they say so). Because the protists as a whole are paraphyletic, new systems often split up or abandon the Kingdom. They, of course, miss their old Kingdoms because they left there many friends and comrades.
